How to write effective prompts: 5 before-and-after examples
A prompt is the request you give the AI. Do it badly and the answer is weak. Do it well and it's gold. Here I won't explain theory. I'll show you 5 real examples, before and after. You'll see the difference with your own eyes.
Example 1: the work email
Before: "Write an email to my boss". Vague result, it doesn't know what to say.
After: "Write a short email to my boss to ask for a day off next Friday, polite but confident tone". Now the AI knows everything and the email is ready to send. The difference is detail.
Example 2: the social post
Before: "Make me a post". You get flat text, just like a thousand others.
After: "Write an Instagram post for my pizzeria, announcing a new mushroom pizza, cheerful tone, max 4 lines, with 3 emoji and an invite to come". Now the post is alive and yours. The difference is context.
Example 3: explaining something hard
Before: "Explain mortgages". A long answer full of big words.
After: "Explain what a mortgage is like I'm 12, with a simple example and no technical terms". Now you understand it all. The difference is the right level.
Example 4: getting ideas
Before: "Give me gift ideas". A generic, boring list.
After: "Give me 10 gift ideas for my 60-year-old mom who loves gardening and crime novels, budget 30 dollars". Now the ideas are on target. The difference is details about the person.
Example 5: fixing text
Before: "Fix this text" and you paste the text. The AI changes it at random.
After: "Correct only the grammar mistakes in this text, don't change the words, keep my style". Now it does only what you want. The difference is giving clear rules.
The formula that always works
Did you see the pattern? An effective prompt almost always has four parts:
- Role: who you are or who the AI should be
- Task: what it must do exactly
- Context: the details it needs
- Format: length, tone, style
Put them together and the answer improves right away. You don't need to be a good writer. You just need to be precise.
