Common AI mistakes to avoid: the checklist
AI is powerful, but it's easy to use it wrong. Then it gives you vague, wrong, or flat answers. Here is a checklist of common AI mistakes to avoid. Read it before you write your next prompt. You can tick it in 30 seconds.
Mistake 1: asking too vaguely
"Write me an email" doesn't work. The AI doesn't know who for, why, or the tone. You get something generic. Tick this before you send:
- Did I say who the reader is?
- Did I say the goal?
- Did I say the tone and length?
The more detail you give, the better the answer. Always.
Mistake 2: not giving the AI a role
Start the prompt by saying who the AI should be. "You are a lawyer", "You are a schoolteacher", "You are a marketing expert". It changes everything. With no role, the AI answers generically. With a role, it answers like an expert in that field.
Mistake 3: trusting numbers and facts
The AI sometimes makes things up. Dates, figures, names, laws. It sounds confident but is wrong. This is called a "hallucination". Fixed rule: every important fact, you check from another source. Never publish numbers or quotes without verifying.
The AI is great at writing. Don't trust it blindly when it informs.
Mistake 4: accepting the first answer
The first answer is a draft, not the finish line. If you don't like it, don't start over. Say what to change:
- "Shorter"
- "Warmer tone"
- "Drop the part about prices"
The AI improves with each round. The conversation is the real trick.
Mistake 5: pasting private data
Never put passwords, card numbers, sensitive client data, or confidential documents in the chat. Treat the AI like a public space. If it's private, it doesn't go in there. This is the mistake that costs the most.
Mistake 6: forgetting the "pretend"
Want a better answer? Give it a fake but useful context. "Pretend you're explaining it to a 10-year-old." "Imagine you're writing for an angry customer." This steers the AI toward the right tone, without you having to explain it in technical words.
The checklist in short
Before each important prompt: give a role, be specific, check the facts, refine the answer, protect private data, use the "pretend". Six points. Thirty seconds. They save you from weak answers and embarrassing mistakes.
